The FIS snowboard events
ICR Book VI (Edition June 2026, art. 2029.3) lists fourteen snowboard events: halfpipe, slopestyle, big air, street style, snowboard cross, snowboard cross team, snowboard cross inclusive team, slalom, giant slalom, parallel giant slalom, parallel slalom, parallel team, banked slalom and dual banked slalom. The FIS World Cup Rules (Edition 2025/26) group the World Cup globes into three families, used below.
| Family | Events in the World Cup | Big globe (WC Rules 2025/26, art. 1.5.2) |
|---|---|---|
| Snowboard cross | Snowboard cross, snowboard cross team | Snowboard cross |
| Snowboard alpine (parallel) | Parallel giant slalom (PGS), parallel slalom (PSL), parallel team (PRT), each with a small globe | Snowboard Alpine Overall |
| Park and pipe | Halfpipe, slopestyle, big air | Snowboard Park & Pipe Overall |
Snowboard cross
In a snowboard cross heat (ICR Book VI, June 2026, arts. 5400 and 5401), each rider starts from a start device and rides an obstacle course marked by gates. A gate is passed when both feet are fixed in the bindings and the whole board crosses the gate line outside the turning pole. The rule just before article 5404 refers to "a complete heat (4 or 6 competitors)", so heats are of four or six.
The recommended course for Level A (art. 5102.1.1) is 800 m to 1,300 m long, with 100 m to 250 m vertical drop and an average angle of 7 to 11 degrees. One qualification option for cross events (art. 5501.3) has every competitor ride three qualification rounds in heats of four, collecting points by finishing place: 10, 5.6, 3 and 1.4 in a heat of four.
Snowboard cross shares its World Cup format rules with ski cross (WC Rules 2025/26, section 4). Any format in ICR 5500 or 7500 may be used, but anything other than timed qualification or the "holistic" format must be agreed in advance with the organiser and the data provider (art. 4.9).
The event list also includes a snowboard cross inclusive team (BXTI). The Southern Hemisphere Precisions 2026/27 contain an article on it (5802) and refer it to article 1411 of the Para Snowboard ICR; its content was not read in detail for this site.
Parallel events (snowboard alpine)
Qualifying for the parallel events is set out in ICR Book VI (June 2026, art. 6504.1). Two courses are set parallel from the start. In a first timed run, odd start numbers ride the red course and even numbers the blue. The top 16 on each course take a second run on the other course, and the top 16 per gender on combined time go through to the final phase. Snowboard alpine World Cups use the parallel formats of ICR 6504 (WC Rules 2025/26, art. 5.9).
Park and pipe
Snowboard halfpipe, slopestyle and big air World Cups use the same formats as freeski (WC Rules 2025/26, art. 2.7): qualification heats with the best of two runs, then semi-finals and finals, with the best of two or three in halfpipe and slopestyle finals and the best two of three in big air semi-finals and finals. The venue sizes in ICR Book VI article 3102 and the judging criteria in articles 3402 and 3403 (execution, difficulty, amplitude, variety and progression, each judge scoring 0 to 100) are set out on the freestyle and freeski page.
World Cup points and season
The 2025/26 World Cup Rules give 100 points for first, 80 for second, 60 for third and 50 for fourth, down to 30th place (art. 1.7.1). An event title needs at least three competitions in that event during the season (art. 1.5.1), and the season runs between 1 July and 31 March (art. 1.1).
Equipment rules that changed for 2026/27
FIS's equipment specifications for snowboard, freestyle, freeski and ski cross, compared between the Edition 2025/2026 (June 2025) and the Edition 2026/2027 (June 2026), show these changes in snowboard cross:
- Helmets: helmets are compulsory in every snowboard event and must conform to a recognised standard such as EN 1077 or ASTM F2040 (C.4). New for 2026/27, snowboard cross helmets must be certified to both ASTM 2040 and EN 1077 class A, and pass an extra EN 1077 test at 6.8 m/s (C.4.1); the 2025/26 edition had no separate snowboard cross rule. In C.4.1 FIS writes "ASTM 2040" without an edition; this site reads it as ASTM F2040.
- Back protection: mandatory in snowboard cross from 2026/27 (C.7.1).
- Cut-resistant undergarment: the two editions disagree on where this rule sits. The 2025/26 edition printed a cut-resistant rule marked "Implementation Season 2026/27" in its snowboard chapter (C.7); the 2026/27 edition puts that rule in the ski cross chapter (B.7) and its snowboard chapter no longer contains it.
The same document sets a minimum board width by length (C.1), requires bindings fixed diagonally to the board with boots not overlapping (C.2), and bans poles or other balance aids (C.5, citing ICR 6903.3). Snowboard cross and parallel riders must wear two-piece clothing, with no one-piece speed suits (C.3). The details are on snowboards and helmets and standards.
At the Olympics
The Canadian Encyclopedia says snowboarding made its Olympic debut at Nagano in 1998 with giant slalom and halfpipe, that snowboard cross joined at Turin 2006, parallel slalom and slopestyle at Sochi 2014, and big air at PyeongChang 2018, when parallel slalom was dropped. FIS's congress history for 1994 records an agenda item "To introduce Snowboard as a FIS discipline", though that page does not record the vote.
FIS listed 11 snowboard medal events at Milano Cortina 2026 (five men's, five women's and one mixed): big air, slopestyle, parallel giant slalom, snowboard cross, mixed team snowboard cross and halfpipe. For 2030, search summaries of the IOC's announcement say parallel giant slalom is kept, and The Sports Examiner, in a report dated 7 July 2026 relaying the IOC Executive Board's 2030 programme decision, reports a snowboard mixed team parallel event and freeride snowboard added. The IOC page itself timed out, so the 2030 list is as reported. Results are on Milano Cortina 2026.
